The Proudest Big Brother | A Relaxed In-Home Newborn Session in Melbourne
A beautiful in-home newborn photography session celebrating a brand-new baby, a very proud big brother and a family I’ve had the pleasure of photographing three times.
Have you ever seen a prouder big brother? I’m sure I haven’t!
One of the things I love most about photographing newborns is capturing those little relationships that are just beginning. And when there is an older sibling involved, those moments can be some of my absolute favourites.
Older siblings often need a little bribing, persuading or negotiating to be in the photos and hold their new baby sibling. Sometimes they’re simply not interested, and honestly, that’s completely okay! With a newborn session, I never want children to feel like they have to perform for the camera.
But this little guy? He was absolutely smitten with his new baby sibling. There was no bribing required here – he was more than happy to get involved and the pride on his face says it all.
The Little Moments
As a Melbourne newborn photographer, I’m always looking for the little moments that happen naturally during a newborn session.
Of course, I want to photograph all the gorgeous newborn details, such as the tiny fingers, little toes, sleepy faces and all those things that you know are going to change so quickly. But I also want to photograph the things that happen around the baby.
And this is where big brother stole the show :D
Sometimes it’s the moments that aren’t planned that end up being some of my favourite newborn photos. There’s no need for everyone to be looking at the camera or sitting perfectly still. I’d much rather photograph your family as they actually are, especially during those early days when everything is a little bit new and a little bit chaotic.
My Third Time Photographing This Family
This session was extra special for me because this was my third time photographing this family.
Being invited back to photograph another milestone in a family’s life is one of the biggest compliments I can receive as a photographer. It means so much to know that they loved their previous photographs enough to trust me to document another important chapter for them.
By the time I arrived for this newborn photography session, it genuinely felt like I was catching up with old friends rather than meeting a family for the first time.
There is something really lovely about that familiarity. We already knew each other, they knew how I work, and there was no pressure to make everything perfect.
We could simply enjoy their new baby and let the morning unfold naturally.
Relaxed In-Home Newborn Photography in Melbourne
This session was super relaxed, just like I hope all of my in-home newborn shoots feel.
One of the reasons I love photographing newborns at home is that there is no need to pack everyone into the car, navigate a new environment or try to get a newborn and older sibling to behave perfectly in a studio.
You’re at home, surrounded by all the familiar things that make this little stage of life yours.
For this family, Mum and Dad spent a lot of the session keeping big brother busy and entertained, while I photographed their sweet new baby.
When I wanted Mum or Dad to join me for a few photographs, I simply grabbed them and brought them into the frame. There was no complicated posing or waiting around for the “perfect” moment.
Just relaxed family time, with me quietly photographing it as it happened.
Newborn Photography Without the Pressure
I think newborn photos should feel like your family, rather than a perfectly posed version of it.
Some families love lots of posed newborn photographs, while others prefer a more natural approach. For me, the most important thing is that everyone is comfortable and that we allow plenty of time for feeding, cuddles, nappy changes, toddler breaks and all the other wonderfully unpredictable things that come with having a newborn.
And when there is an older sibling, I definitely don’t expect them to spend the entire session sitting still!
In this case, Mum and Dad did a brilliant job of keeping big brother happy and occupied while I photographed the baby, and we simply brought him into the photos whenever he was ready.
The result was a collection of natural newborn photos that captured this family exactly as they were at this moment in time.
Beautiful Newborn Photos of a Growing Family
There is something incredibly special about photographing a family as it grows.
The first time I photographed this family, they were celebrating a completely different stage of their lives. Now, here we were, welcoming their newest little person and documenting the relationship between two siblings who will hopefully share a lifetime of adventures together.
And that is one of the reasons I love being a Melbourne newborn photographer.
I don’t just want to create beautiful photographs of your newborn. I want to create photographs that you’ll look back on years from now and remember exactly what this season of your life felt like.
The tiny baby.
The proud big brother.
The sleepy cuddles.
The slightly chaotic moments.
And all the love in between.
These are the photographs that become part of your family’s story.
